The Eurasian otter is the only wild otter found in Britain. They are also found throughout Europe, as far as the north as the artic circle across most of Asia and northern Africa
Otters are related to badgers, weasels and skunks .They have very long, slim bodies plus powerful jaws and mammoth size whiskers. Their webbed toes and strong rudder-like tails to help them swim .In British Isles, otters are found inn both fresh and saltwater .But coastal otters, like those in Scotland and the Shetlands, need access to fresh water pools to wash their insulating fur. Otters are most active at dusk and during the night .They spend most of the day resting in there burrows ,known as holts ,which are built from sticks and branches along thee water’s edge .They love eating fish ,but will also feed on
Crabs, small water birds, frogs and volts. Otters use their gigantic whiskers as underwater sensors to detect their prey.
They breed all year round .Females give birth to 2-3 cubs at a time. Otter cubs are blind at birth and are covered in soft fur .They start to swim when they are about three months old.
Otter population are considered vulnerable, but the good news that their numbers are slowly increasing in Britain.
